Read Me
My number one interest is philosophy thanks to Sophie’s World by Jostein Gaarder that saved my life when I was sixteen (it is my number one all time favourite book and he is my favourite author for that reason). To me a true philosopher is described in that book - and it is more to with asking the questions than having all the answers. My favourite philosopher is George Berkeley (my ideas are also influenced by Thales, Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, St Augustine of Hippo, Rene Descartes, David Hume, Immanuel Kant, Karl Marx and, of course, Jostein Gaarder).
My number one value is awareness. I try to make decisions solely with this value as it leads to my nine other top ten values such as: compassion, growth, learning, adventure, appreciation etc.
The number one word to describe me is intense.
I am a “little l” liberal (on the spectrum of liberal vs. conservative) meaning that I would never vote for the Liberal Party because they are actually conservative. I am a member of the Greens (and have always preferentially voted Greens in both the house of representatives AND the senate), as they are the party I most agree with (though I don’t agree with them completely). I wanted Al Gore to be president, or otherwise Hillary Clinton.
I am not certain of anything (thanks David Hume) but try to believe in the direction which has the most evidence behind it. I am more convinced that I don’t have free will than I am of any of my other beliefs (such as the sun rising tomorrow). But not having free will doesn’t bother me in the slightest as I fully enjoy the illusion that I do have it (and thus I live my life as though I do have it), thus please don’t waste your time arguing with me as it’s not going to change or improve my life at all.
I’ve discovered that a lot of the things that society thinks are good are not right for me. I try to live by Philippians 4:8
I don’t believe in mutilating my body for fashion or beauty (I regret piercing my ears just because my best friend did when I was young, and have since removed the earrings in the hope that the holes will heal over). However I do have one small tattoo on my upper right arm for religious commitment and identity reasons.
I am a frugal person and thus completely unimpressed by expensive brand name products.
I am a city girl and live in the CBD in a cute one-bedroom apartment. I feel trapped in the suburbs (and have no desire for a large house with a backyard), and the country is good for a holiday provided I can get back to the city again. However eventually I will have a small herb garden.
I would like to be vegan and leave kissing until my wedding day, but I find giving up those things difficult.
I’m engaged to Kieran (websinthe) after following an honest upfront goal-oriented all-or-nothing approach to relationships (casual dating lots of different types of people with no commitment is fine, exclusive dating is fine provided that after a year’s worth of “learning experience” they either plan the proposal or set me free [a year is long enough to experience all the seasons of life with someone], exclusive dating for more than a year with no hint of lifelong security is not okay with me and limits what work/study/life/travel opportunities I can take). Kieran and I were friends for six years and then dated for just over one year before he proposed, and I accepted because he is an imago match and I know him. If this doesn’t make sense, read Harville Hendrix.
In my spare time I can’t seem to stop myself from writing novels for young teenagers, but I refuse to show them to anyone (with the exception of one story, which publishing it did not cure my fear) so I’ve never aspired to be a famous author let alone make a career out of it.
I love music that I would describe as “happy rock” (also I like dance music, ie. techno with a tune to it), and I tend to dislike music that is in a minor key. My favourite bands are Angels and Airwaves, Goo Goo Dolls, Counting Crows, Vertical Horizon, Everclear, The Killers, and John Mayer. I will eventually learn to play the piano.
I have 120 coloured pencils, and sometimes it still doesn’t seem like I have enough shades of each colour. I like colours best when they are in rainbow order, for example in fabric and paint stores. I like colouring in other people’s drawings [especially of humans and horses] but I do not like to draw things myself.
I love the Sims 2 because its like playing with a dollhouse (I have every single expansion pack and stuff pack, except for the H&M and Ikea ones because I’m not going to pay for advertising). I’m looking forward to Sims 3 which will give my Sims more personality and options for their lives.
Also none of my opinions were given to me by my parents, just in case what I write unintentionally reflects on them in a way that they do not like. They have always encouraged me to act, talk and think in a socially acceptable manner. Sadly what is socially acceptable does not always match with what my integrity thinks I should do.
One of my most important personal views is that I should never enforce what is right for me on other people, so I would appreciate it if my readers would respect my right to think differently (and if you have an argument against one of my opinions, well I’ve been thinking through these issues for ten years now so I’ve probably already heard it before and rejected it years ago for reasons that I’m not at all interested in disclosing because my doing so would not help you in the slightest).
I’m shaving my head mid-march 2009 for leukaemia - please sponsor me
